OUR NAMESAKE
Remembering Sarah Norman
1928 – 2023
Sarah’s dedication to the library and passion for literacy drove her and became her community hallmark for the latter part of her life. A perpetual advocate, she lived, breathed and adored this library, and we dedicate this new brand, web site and community effort to her. She would have loved this new direction.
Among her accolades was Canton Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year, an Outstanding Woman of Van Zandt County and even Citizen of the Year for the Northeast Texas Library System in 2003. Van Zandt County even declared Sarah Norman Day in October 2008 and October 2013 to honor her birthday and recognize her honorable service to fellow citizens.
Her love for people, her penchant for community involvement and her passion about reading and literacy were the hallmarks of our namesake, Sarah Elizabeth Norman. A local celebrity, Sarah was no stranger to community honors for her service in organizations including the DAV Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star, American Cancer Society, United Methodist Women, Van Zandt County Library Board, Wednesday Study Club, and Friends of the Library.
